The Book is Out!

Inquiry-Driven Innovation: A Practical Guide to Supporting School-Based Change aims to address the pressing need for intentional and sustained innovation in education in ways that are responsive to local contexts.

A lot of educators want to solve problems or drive change within their schools but either don’t know how to start, or aren’t given the opportunity to do so. The framework for inquiry-driven innovation provides professional development resources and stories of practice that help communities of educators look for ways to innovate in their own schools, leading to school-based change that is empowering, responsive, and professionally enriching for educators. Through this type of educational innovation, two inextricable journeys unfold: one is a journey of school-based change, and the other is a more personal journey of growth for individual educators leading that change.

Inquiry-Driven Innovation is both a practical guide for supporting school-based change and a handbook for promoting powerful professional growth among teachers and administrators. It includes:

  • An actionable framework for promoting school-based innovation

  • Real-world case studies of educators developing innovation strategies in a variety of school contexts

  • A suggested roadmap or process for pursuing inquiry-driven innovation

  • An Innovation Toolkit filled with over 20 research-based pedagogical tools and resources for educators

The book is based on a collaborative design-based research project carried out between a research team from Project Zero at Harvard Graduate School of Education and study groups of teachers and administrators from seven schools in the United Arab Emirates, all serving different communities and variously following American, British, Indian, and International Baccalaureate curricula. The content of the book has therefore been developed to be relevant and implementable across different cultural and curricular contexts, including ones in the United States.

We’re excited to share this work with schools, educators, and anyone who is passionate about school-based innovation driven by educators!
